Like an actor reading lines from a script, I can choose a new response to life, a new reading. Some people at this point would yell, “Denial!” But what are we denying is the impostor within us. Just because we have an honest feeling, that doesn’t mean it’s who we honestly are. My angry self is not the real me. Does it have to be acknowledged? Yes, but only in order to go beyond it. Once I’ve seen my anger, I’m ready, as they say in AA, to “act as if” I can do it differently. Because I can. Our ego has made up a fictional character that we now think of as our personality. But we are constantly creating that personality, and if we choose, we are constantly recreating it.
